This variety is a spreading, branched, aromatic shrub with a main stem that is woody at the base and herbaceous side branches; very attractive orchid-like flowers emerge in late winter and continue through mid-summer
Ornamental Features
Heartleaf Geranium features delicate clusters of lavender orchid-like flowers with deep purple veins at the ends of the branches from late winter to early summer. It has dark green foliage with grayish green undersides. The serrated heart-shaped leaves remain dark green throughout the winter.
Landscape Attributes
Heartleaf Geranium is a multi-stemmed evergreen shrub with a more or less rounded form. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition.
This is a relatively low maintenance shrub, and should only be pruned after flowering to avoid removing any of the current season's flowers. It has no significant negative characteristics.

Heartleaf Geranium will grow to be about 5 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 5 feet. It has a low canopy, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 20 years.
This shrub does best in full sun to partial shade. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. This species is not originally from North America.
