Description:

White flower clusters dot this free-form evergreen shrub in summer; pointy, aromatic leaves have virtually no petioles; this attractive shrub is not suited to shearing, best left in its sculptural form with interesting bark exposed

Ornamental Features

Twisted Myrtle features showy fragrant white star-shaped flowers along the branches in early summer. It has attractive dark green evergreen foliage. The fragrant pointy leaves are highly ornamental and remain dark green throughout the winter. It produces navy blue berries in late summer. The twisted tan bark is extremely showy and adds significant winter interest.

Landscape Attributes

Twisted Myrtle is a dense multi-stemmed evergreen shrub with an upright spreading habit of growth. Its relatively fine texture sets it apart from other landscape plants with less refined foliage.

This is a relatively low maintenance shrub, and usually looks its best without pruning, although it will tolerate pruning. It is a good choice for attracting birds, bees and butterflies to your yard, but is not particularly attractive to deer who tend to leave it alone in favor of tastier treats. It has no significant negative characteristics.

Twisted Myrtle is recommended for the following landscape applications;

  • Accent
  • Mass Planting
  • Hedges/Screening
  • General Garden Use

Planting & Growing

Twisted Myrtle will grow to be about 10 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 10 feet. It tends to fill out right to the ground and therefore doesn't necessarily require facer plants in front, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 10 years.

This shrub does best in full sun to partial shade. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. This is a selected variety of a species not originally from North America.
