Description:

Amazing fall color is gold with crimson on this beautiful specimen tree; large, glossy leaves are green during summer; maples are popular for their extraordinary fall color and this species is no exception

Ornamental Features

Painted Maple is primarily valued in the landscape for its ornamental globe-shaped form. It has attractive green deciduous foliage. The large glossy lobed palmate leaves are highly ornamental and turn an outstanding gold in the fall.

Landscape Attributes

Painted Maple is a deciduous tree with a more or less rounded form. Its relatively coarse texture can be used to stand it apart from other landscape plants with finer foliage.

This is a relatively low maintenance tree, and should only be pruned in summer after the leaves have fully developed, as it may 'bleed' sap if pruned in late winter or early spring. It has no significant negative characteristics.

Painted Maple is recommended for the following landscape applications;

  • Accent
  • Shade
  • Mass Planting

Planting & Growing

Painted Maple will grow to be about 40 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 40 feet. It has a high canopy with a typical clearance of 5 feet from the ground, and should not be planted underneath power lines. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 80 years or more.

This tree should only be grown in full sunlight. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn't be allowed to dry out. It is not particular as to soil pH, but grows best in rich soils. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. This species is not originally from North America.

This plant is not reliably hardy in our region, and certain restrictions may apply; contact the store for more information.
