Description:

An impressive selection that is covered in pink flowers in spring; small, dark purple fruit persists on the tree right into winter; green summer foliage gives way to stunning gold in the fall

Ornamental Features

Jan Kuperus Flowering Crab is draped in stunning clusters of fragrant pink flowers along the branches in mid spring, which emerge from distinctive red flower buds before the leaves. The fruits are showy deep purple pomes carried in abundance from early fall to mid winter. The fruit can be messy if allowed to drop on the lawn or walkways, and may require occasional clean-up. It has forest green deciduous foliage which emerges coppery-bronze in spring. The pointy leaves turn an outstanding gold in the fall.

Landscape Attributes

Jan Kuperus Flowering Crab is a dense multi-stemmed deciduous tree with an upright spreading habit of growth. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition.

Planting & Growing

Jan Kuperus Flowering Crab will grow to be about 40 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 30 feet. It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 1 foot from the ground, and should not be planted underneath power lines. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 50 years or more.

This tree should only be grown in full sunlight. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn't be allowed to dry out. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. This particular variety is an interspecific hybrid.

This plant is not reliably hardy in our region, and certain restrictions may apply; contact the store for more information.
